How my journey began

Schorr, perhaps the best known urban mural painter in the world, has painted 3-D murals in and around many of New York City’s parks for more than a decade. His murals have been featured on NY1’s New Yorker of the Week, Fox 5’s Good Day New York, and in the movie New York, I Love You, starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Christie. Academics have also taken note of Schorr’s New York murals. In “On the Wall: Four Decades of Community Murals in New York City” (University Press of Mississippi, 2009), authors Janet Braun-Reinitz, Amy Goodman, Jane Weissman write:

People enter, rather than view, Schorr’s faraway landscapes, which literally envelop New York’s distinctly urban parks (p. 163). Schorr, not content with one wall, looks at the total site. Every surface, fence, and pavement are potential components in his grand environmental schemes (p. 164). If not community murals in the strictest sense, Schorr’s projects, characterized by loose brushwork and high color, invite thousands of New Yorkers into exotic, distant landscapes, far from their everyday concrete reality (p. 164).

But, beyond New York, Schorr’s paintings have traveled the world, including shows at the Slick Art Fair in Paris, the American Academy in Rome, on Brick Lane in London and Art Basel in Miami. He has been featured in Huffinton Post , The New York Times, The Washington Post, Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine, ArtNews, Details, The Miami Herald, UPN 9, MSG Network . WCBS and MSNBC.

Da Race, Schorr’s latest project, is ongoing at more than twenty locations around Manhattan. Da Race whimsically pits race cars against a homely, generic New York City ice cream truck as they exchange leads in advancing depictions around the city. Each successive location serves as a snapshot of the ever-progressing nip-and-tuck auto race, keeping the viewers in suspense about the eventual winner.

Another current project highlights Schorr’s continued pairing of food/art and chef/painter as he explores culinary creation in his Hot in the Kitchen series, featuring David Burke and other famous chefs. Hot in the Kitchen has been a natural evolution from Schorr’s highly regarded It Comes from the Crate series where he used deconstructed, wooden produce crates cum canvases to showcase vibrantly hued food stuffs (peppers, olives, oranges, fish, cheese). These smashups of form and content debuted at The James Beard House’s Greenhouse Gallery and led to a creative artist-chef relationship between Schorr and Burke. Indeed, Schorr’s artistic palette echoes Burke’s bold, inimitable strokes blending unexpected flavors, textures and color. Schorr and Burke are two kindred spirits sharing artistic and culinary inspiration.
